Juniors Overview and How you can Start Rowing!!

Rowing is a fantastic sport for anyone from Middle School to 90 years old.  We like to say if you can walk you can row.  Rowing for middle school students generaly starts with a summer camp experience to see if they like the activity and can handle to physical efforts as well and the mental focus on the water.

The rowing year is divided into four main seasons.  Fall Competitive, Winter Conditioning, Spring Competitive and Summer racing.  You can join at the start of any of these seasons and enjoy time of the water with others who want to learn and excel in the sport.

Rowing?  What is it?

Rowing is the oldest intercollegiate sport in the United States and has been called the Ultimate Team Sport!!  Rowing is a sport that allows anybody and any age to participate and is not only a competitive sport but one that can also be done for recreation, general fitness and is a true life sport.  Rowers often start rowing in high school and continue for their entire life well into the 80’s and 90’s.

In Dallas there are 8 programs for high school ages most of which are at private schools.  White Rock is open to anyone from any school.  We compete against other Dallas, Texas, regional, and national teams in the Fall and Spring competitive seasons.  The National Championships is the Goal.

Rowing at White Rock!

White Rock Rowing is a club program comprised of athletes from 19 different schools from around East Dallas and continues to grow and become more competitive every year.  Currently the team has over 70 members and new members are encouraged to start at the beginning of each season or in the summer during a summer camp.  Our members come from a wide background which gives our team a great sense of community and openness.  Anyone from any school can row at White Rock.

White Rock Lake is an ideal place to row and our boathouse is the only rowing boathouse on the lake.  White Rock Rowing also has classes for adult members and community groups.

How to get started?

One of the best ways to get started is to join a week long summer camp and try rowing in the summer.  These camps are low cost, low commitment and set up for learning!  Learning a brand new sport can be challenging, there are no sidelines, hoops, balls, goals, mitts, sticks, whistles or other things you are used to seeing at practice.  At rowing you will be on the water, in long boats, using every major muscle group to help you and your teammates move the boat across the water.  There is truly nothing like it!!  Camp dates and costs are posted on the summer camp page of this website.

Another way to get started is to visit a practice and meet some of the team members and coaches.  We encourage new rowers to come watch a practice to see that the rowers are just like you!  Rowers do tend to be tall and strong but there is a place and seat for everyone so come check it out and you will have the time of your life.
